Flood Watch vs. Warning: What
This hurricane season, it is important to prepare ahead. Know about the difference between flood watches and warnings in this article.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs annually from June 1st to November 30th. During this time, Floridians must be prepared for floods caused by heavy rains, hurricanes, tornadoes, storm surges and other natural disasters. It is critical to create a comprehensive emergency planpreparedness kit, and a safe shelter to keep you and your family safe if disaster strikes.

Discover the differences between flood advisories, watches and warnings below.

Flood Advisories

A flood advisory is issued when a flooding event is not expected to be severe enough to warrant a warning. While a flood advisory is considered the lowest level of flooding weather alert, the flood still has the potential to cause property damage for those not adequately prepared.

Types of Flood Advisories
  • Areal Flood Advisory: Issued for flooding resulting from moderate to heavy gradual rainfall.
  • Coastal Flood Advisory: Issued for imminent flooding along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean or Gulf of Mexico.
  • Flash Flood Advisory: Issued during heavy rains when a sudden flood is expected. Flash floods cause more fatalities yearly than other climate hazards.
  • River Flood Advisory: Issued when river levels reach dangerous heights due to heavy rain.
When flood advisories are issued, stay updated on flood status by tuning in to a local news source. Prepare supplies and family members in the event of evacuation.

What is a Flood Watch?

  • A flood watch is issued when there is a possibility of flooding.
  • More serious than an advisory but less severe than a warning.
  • As with a flood advisory, stay tuned to local news sources when a flood watch is issued, as it may turn into a warning and necessitate moving to a higher area.
  • Ensure emergency plans and supplies are prepared to quickly evacuate.
  • Avoid the risk of not being able to respond quickly and worry by preparing ahead.

What is a Flood Warning?

  • A flood warning is issued for occurring or imminent flooding.
  • A flood warning may be elevated to a flash flood warning depending on factors including rain intensity and the likelihood of greater damage.
  • If conditions are worsening and a flash flood is likely, it is time to consider evacuation, especially when a property is situated in a flood-prone area.
  • Discover higher ground where you can safely evacuate if necessary.
  • Do not underestimate the power of fast-moving water. Do not walk or drive in heavily flooded areas, as the current may be strong enough to knock you over or carry away your vehicle.
